The tradition of wearing Fancy Dresses as Halloween Costumes dates back to 16th Century when this term was first attested.
It is an annual holiday observed on October 31 every year to invite and honor family ancestors and to ward off evil spirits. This belief of warding off harmful spirits gave rise to the tradition of wearing fancy costumes and masks to camouflage oneself as a harmful sprit thereby avoiding any harm.
Fashion and famous celebrities have both played a major role in the manner in which people dress during Halloween in the recent years. People have found inspiration from one of the worst dressed celebrities; Lady Gaga who is an advocate of wearing fancy costumes and is a trend setter in terms of looking weird. She has achieved tremendous fame among the younger generation due to the way she dresses.
The idea of jack-o-lanterns was adopted from the tradition of celebrating the souls in purgatory by lighting candle lanterns engraved out of turnips. Faces are carved out of large hollow pumpkins which are readily available and are p
laced on windows to ward off the evil spirits. Orange and Black colors are associated with Halloween to represent the darkness of the night and the color of fire. Another custom associated with this celebration is the ‘Trick or treat’. Children dressed in fancy costumes go to houses requesting candies or money and asking the question Trick or treat? If the house owners do not give a treat in the form of either candies or money or both, children perform a prank on them or their properties. Horror movies and ghost stories are normally aired during Halloween in order to benefit from the festivity.
The market for fancy dresses as Halloween costumes is a considerably big one and surprisingly the revenue generated from the sale of such costumes is around the billion dollar mark. This market will grow to greater heights in the coming times. There’s no doubt about that.
